Quilling is a relaxing and inexpensive past time. It used to be known as ‘Paper Filigree’ and was known to have been practiced in the Middle Ages on the Continent. In the 18th Century, it was taught to young ladies. Jane Austen mentions it in Sense and Sensibility and Charlotte Bronte was known to have been a quiller as was one of George III daughters.
In the 1980s The Quilling Guild was established to try to ‘spread the word’ about quilling. The Guild has applied for quilling to be recognised as an endangered craft. Tutor Anne Straker is an Accredited Member of the Quilling Guild, having produced a sampler and two original pieces of work demonstrating the recognised techniques of quilling. This work has been examined by expert quillers and judged to be of a standard for her to be awarded ‘Accredited Member of the Quilling Guild’.
Teas provided. Other drinks and cakes or lunches are available to purchase from the Stiwdio 3 cafe should you wish. If you can then please bring a small pair of sharp, pointed scissors (similar to embroidery scissors but they’ll be used for paper)! Suitable for ages 12 and up.
