The details

I first spoke to Angela about designing a dressmaking course back in October of last year. Angela and I worked together many years ago when I was running my digital embroidery business and Angela was running her bridalwear business in Cardiff. We bumped into each other again about a year ago and have been chatting about running this exciting course for over six months (that’s how long it takes to get a unique course like this one designed and prepared, so thank you for your patience).

Angela says: “My ambition is for all those attending the course is to become confident THINKING garment constructors. From understanding the decisions made during the construction of this fabulous coat and then completing the processes yourself, you will gain a real insight into the WHYS of garment construction. Combining the answers to these questions with top tips to achieve a professional finish I hope you will become FEARLESS garment constructors!

This is a content filled course so it is for those who have either made several garments previously and/or are comfortable using a sewing machine. If you haven’t made many garments yet then you will need to make two to three between now and the course. These garments do not need to be complicated but enough to ensure you feel comfortable handling part made garments and using your sewing machine.

If I say so myself… I ADORE the versatility of this coat! In its simplest form it is a classic flared coat but add the belt and detachable bolero and it becomes a classic trench.”

Please have a browse of the gallery. The start of the gallery shows our prototype garment modelled by Emily, followed by photos of the course underway.

And here are some photos which the girls have taken of themselves in their coats for us to see.

The finer detail:

•Arrive lunchtime (between midday and 2pm) to meet your fellow stitchers and have a good look at the sample coat.  You will try on one of the pre-made toiles so Angela can assess any alterations to be made to the pattern which has been drafted to your measurements.

•2pm to 4pm Angela will fine tune the patterns.

•At 4pm we will start! During this first session you will cut the wool fabric for your coat.  There are multiple layers and many pattern pieces so whilst you cut your wool fabric Suzi and Angela will cut out the interlinings, fusing, canvas and lining layers.  Then you will apply your interlining and interfacings so all the layers are ready to start construction in the morning.

•Make your sleeves

•Construct your collar

•Make the detachable bolero

•Construct perfect pockets!

•Assemble the main pieces of your coat

•Make the belt

•Make and attach your lining

•Attach your collar

•Set in your sleeves

•Secure shoulder pads

•Make and attach belt carriers

•Position and stitch buttonholes

•Secure buttons

•Close lining

•Have your Tah Dah moment!

Please read all details carefully and if you have any questions please do get in touch. You can email me

We do our very best to give you as much information as we can regarding the details of your course, but we do understand that some of you may have further questions before you decide to book.

This full residential course with Angela will provide you with four full days of tuition. Staying at The Vestry gives you the space and time to work at your own pace later into the evenings if you require (or you may be an early riser and want to get going on with your sewing early). We will mainly be working in Llangrannog’s pretty village hall opposite the accommodation.

We have sufficient equipment for all those attending the course but if you would like to bring your own sewing machine then it will be a splendid opportunity to spend three days using it and learning how you can maximise what it can do for you. You might want to bring your own basic equipment including shears, small scissors, stitch un-picker (it happens!), tape measure and adjustable measuring guide. If you need an excuse to expand your range of sewing accessories you will find it useful to have good quality pinking shears, a point turner and possibly a buttonhole chisel/cutter. The tweed fabric has wonderful depth and spring so you might want to treat yourself to some longer than normal pins. Angela uses pins 34mm and 45mm in length. Again, we have sufficient of ALL these items available if you are unable to bring your own.

These are cooked freshly at her restaurant in the beautiful seaside village. Jane can bring everything to the guest house for us to heat and serve and we can eat together in the dining room, or we can all walk down to The Beach Hut and eat there. This gives the whole experience a much more relaxed feel.
