Spend a weekend immersing yourself in indigo dyeing.
A full two days course using the amazing natural Indigo blue dye, starting with a bit of history and inspirational samples from tutor Cat Lewis. You’ll understand the process of making and using the indigo dye, with many ways of pattern making using Shibori techniques. We’ll make the indigo stock solution together and then make individual dye vats. You’ll learn many Shibori techniques, such as Arashi, Nui and Itjami. You can then play and develop your own pieces on day two. If time, we may add in a little rust and botanical prints!
All materials required are provided including a selection of fabrics, but you can bring your own fabrics / yarns / garments / projects to work on on day two.
A spacious work area, individual dye bath & information pack is given to each of you on the day; it’s worth bringing your own basic art and stitch kit – scissors, knife, threads, pins, tape, gloves, pinny, notepad, plastic containers/bags for taking home wet work etc. A plentiful supply of tea is provided. Coffees, great cakes and delicious, wholesome lunches can be purchased from the new Stiwdio 3 café.
“Enjoyed this course so much! Cath, the tutor, was amazing, patient, generous and knowledgeable. We were made very welcome. The course was suitable for people completely new to dyeing, and those with experience. I’d do it all again in a second.” – Chris
“This was a very good course and lived up to all my expectations. The tutor was knowledgeable and very patient. It was great to get our hands into the dye and not worry about the mess. Three unforgettable days with lovely people and plenty of inspiration to continue with indigo and shibori.” – Jude
“Really great upbeat three days – relaxed but very industrious! Great to put time aside to dedicate to working with indigo alongside like minded people. Tutor was really helpful and informative. A thoroughly enjoyable few days.” – Carole
“I thoroughly enjoyed this course. It was very well run, everything we needed was supplied and our course tutor, Cath Lewis was an inspiring teacher. I had purchased some silk for dyeing but Suzi had brought silk, linen, cotton and wool and we tried them all. Cath actually taught us how to make an Indigo vat, not just how to use one and, after she had demonstrated lots of different tying techniques, allowed us to develop our own special interests. We all ended up with favourite materials and tried inventing our own patterns. All in all, it was brilliant. I thought it was a bit pricey at first, but looking back I got very good value for my money and I am very glad I did it. I would definitely encourage others to have a go. I am still dyeing, with indigo and now with Procion dyes as well, Cath opened a door for me and I am immensely grateful.” – Nicky
