June 29th / October 12th at Ystrad Farm, Brechfa
One day workshop £175
Learn how to create beautiful prints using sustainable natural plant dyes and with a sprinkling of petals, create your very own botanical silk scarf.
Nature has an abundance of colour and surprise; in this workshop, you will learn how to create beautiful botanical prints on silk using sustainable natural plant dyes, organically grown and gathered by Claire from the flower field at The Flower Hive close to her home in South Wales. Sampling firstly by exploring the most fascinating leaves for pattern and your desired colour from petals and berries. Experimenting with small swathes of fabric and selected plant materials, learn how to extract colour, immerse dye, create repeat patterns, fold, wrap and bind. Then eco print by direct leaf contact, encouraged little preparation and transferring detail onto cloth which secretly happens during the bundle dyeing method. Choosing from your favourite sample you will then develop and enhance your skills. You will scale up your sample tailoring technique and design to desired outcome, making an exquisite backcloth of colour and pattern on your very own gorgeous silk scarf.
• One day of professional dyeing and printing tuition from Claire Cawte at Ystrad
• A spacious work area is allocated to each student and there are plenty of tools to go around. All materials required are included in the course fee. You’ll be provided with lengths of sample fabrics which include linen, cotton lawn and Habotai silk. You are then also provided with a scarf length piece of silk satin for your final scarf. You are welcome to bring your own fabrics for dyeing too should you wish.
• A plentiful supply of tea, coffee and cake is provided. Wholesome, delicious lunches are available to purchase on the day. Juliet at Ystrad Farm happily caters to any dietary requirements when notified in advance.
“Excellent course content – a lot learned and the pieces we took away with us at the end of the day are absolutely gorgeous and I will definitely wear my scarf. The venue was perfect with lots of space to work and make a mess. Claire was a great tutor, very approachable and knowledgeable and Suzi is just so helpful and friendly. Lunch was provided and it was wonderful! Home cooked, and so tasty – as we had vegetarians and gluten-free folks with us their dietary needs were catered for and we all had the same but it was so deliciously yummy it was not obviously specialised – Juliet is an amazing cook. I will be booking again and I highly recommend this workshop 5/5.” – Lynne
This weekend workshop will be held at Ystrad Organic Farm in the heart of the Brechfa mountains.
