When you think of Summertime, perhaps west Wales is not the first destination that comes to mind, but in fact, our small part of the world offers a tremendous beauty that, we believe, has its own unique character.  After you’ve read a little bit about the wonderful beaches, delightful cafes & restaurants in our surrounding area, you too might be tempted to venture West!

Why not indulge in a crafty workshop and make a holiday of it with Make it in Wales this Summer. We can suggest some top notch accommodation close to our workshop venues and give you some ideas to keep you busy (or relaxed!) on holiday. First up, a couple of our favourite accommodation options…

The Old Vicarage B&B, Moylegrove

This exquisite Old Vicarage B&B is an Edwardian house that has been newly refurbish and holds plenty of character and history between its walls. Beautifully bright rooms and quirky decor within, nestled between trees and vast greenery, and a stone’s throw from the Pembrokeshire coastline. We are lucky enough to be running a few workshops at this beautiful B&B in the quiet village of Moylegrove. The lovely owner Meg has kindly offered our customers a 10% discount when they come to stay on a MiiW workshop.

Workshops at The Old Vicarage include:

Felted Quirky Bird – A one day workshop creating a unique felted bird with Cambrian Wool
Paper Cutting – Learn the meticulous art of paper cutting on a one-day course
Drawing with Wool – Learn to felt and manipulate wool fibre and draw!

Oriel Milgi B&B, St Dogmeals

Another fabulous B&B that we love is Oriel Milgi, situated in the quaint little village of St Dogmeals, very close to Cardigan town and just around the corner from the glorious Poppit Sands beach. We will be holding one of our popular Bookbinding workshops at the Coach House in this same village, just a short walk from the Oriel Milgi B&B, so it would be a perfect accommodation option for anyone who fancies a little holiday making a fabulous book from scratch.

Workshops in St Dogmeals include:

Bookbinding – Learn to bind a beautiful hardback book
Primitive Pit Firing & Vessel Making – A two-day pottery course centred on primitive pit firing

fforest Granary Lofts, Cardigan

Situated right on the edge of the river Teifi, fforest’s Granary Lofts are stylist, self-catering apartments in a beautiful & historic building. All lofts are south-west facing with stunning views down the Teifi estuary and Cardigan Castle on the other side of the river. Also across the river, the magnificent fforest pizza restaurant The Pizzatipi where delicious pizzas and drinks are served daily throughout Summer. The Pizzatipi is also a MiiW workshop venue this year! Courses based in Cardigan are in abundance so booking your accommodation in or near Cardigan would be perfect for your crafty holiday.

Workshops in Cardigan include:

Carve a Silver Ring – Carve your design out of jewellers wax to be cast in solid silver
Machine Knitting – Create a machine-knitted scarf or cushion
Upholster a Milking Stool – Using Welsh woollen fabrics, upholster your own stool

Some of our favourite beaches

We are lucky enough to have a vast coastline right on our doorstep, and with that comes some spectacular beaches. There are a few that are firm favourites of course!

Eat locally!

There’s nothing better than finding a gem of a cafe to visit or a local food producer to buy fresh food from. There are a couple we absolutely love that we consider our ‘locals’.

Bara Menyn, Cardigan

An artisan bakehouse and café under one roof in one of Cardigan’s historic Custom House buildings. They bake organic sourdough daily and serve up a range of locally sourced breakfasts and lunches, home-made cakes and speciality coffee. They also have a garden and a licensed bar! We are lucky enough to have Bara Menyn as one of our MiiW venues where we host tutor Maggie’s Carve a Silver Ring workshop. Olives, humus, Bara Menyn sourdough bread and oils included in this ticket price – oh yeah.

Crwst, Cardigan Market

Our wonderful friends from Crwst started their micro bakery in September 2016 and have since gone from strength to strength in a very short space of time, and now have huge plans to expand their business in 2018 (keep your eyes peeled for Crwst in Cardigan this Summer!) For now, you’ll find them at their stall at Cardigan Market on Thursdays and Saturdays, 10-1pm. Expect handmade organic breads, brioche doughnuts and seasonal bakes all from their home kitchen!
